Biography that traces a yogi’s life

N Vinoth Kumar
Published Date: Feb 21, 2013
In connection with the 12th death anniversary of Yogi Sri Ramsuratkumar, an ascetic of Tiruvannamalai, a biography titled ‘Bhagawan Yogi Ramsuratkumar Saritham’ was released recently.

The Tamil book on the eminent spiritual guru and his teachings is authored by noted Tamil writer Balakumaran.

Sri Yogi Ramsuratkumar (1918 – 2001), hailed as ‘God Child of Tiruvannamalai’, was a mystic saint. Several devotees consider him as a ‘Siddha Purushar’ (a mystic) in the tradition of Saivite Siddhars of Tamil Nadu.

He came to Tiruvannamalai at a later stage of his life and exhorted people to turn inward for spiritual enlightenment. Fondly called as Visiri Saamiyaar in Tamil, he carried palm leaves and used it as a hand-held fan.

Whenever devotees went to him, he always stunned them by saying “I am a beggar.” He lived like a beggar indeed. Attired in simple clothing, he always used to sport a coconut shell in his hand. He used to wear a green shawl and reside in a hut. Devotees considered all these as spiritual messages. His simple message to the world was ‘looking inward is the way to enlightenment’.

Balakumaran, a noted writer of many popular novels like Irumbu Kuthiraigal, Mercury Pookkal, Ezhil, Udaiyaar, Gangai Konda Cholan among others, came to know about Ramsuratkumar some three decades ago.

At first, when Balakumaran met Ramsuratkumar, he got bitter experience, since the yogi was not willing to see him. But through his repeated efforts, he got introduced to the saint and became his disciple and is said to have got enlightenment through the yogi’s spiritual touch.

In memory of Ramsuratkumar who died on 20th February 2001, Balakumaran has written this biography about the yogi and it has been brought out by Visa Publications. It was released by the end of 2012 coinciding with his 94th birth anniversary celebrations.

The book has been written based on the details put briefly in the book Amarakaviyam written by the yogi’s devotee Parthasarathy and Balakumaran’s own experiences with the yogi. The book brings smiles on the faces of the yogi’s devotees, since many of them know little about the life of Ramsuratkumar. According to many devotees, the book is also a spiritual guide.

“Ramsuratkumar was born as Ramsurat Kunwar in Nardara, a small village along the stretches of river Ganges. After his intermediate education, he went in search of spiritual enlightenment. Hence, he visited three important saints of South India —Ramana Maharishi in Tiruvannamalai, Sri Aurobindo in Puducherry and Papa Ramdas in Kerala. But, due to his mundane duties Ramsurat Kunwar was unable to became a disciple at his young age,” says Balakumaran, in the book.

He further narrates, “He was in deep search of spiritual enlightenment. But he didn’t forsake his worldly duties for that, nor did he go to forests or caves. He didn’t practise Brahmacharya (celibacy). While he worked as a teacher in a high school, he also continued his search for god. He lived as a normal person and led a normal life.”

After he attained enlightenment in Tiruvannamalai, he came to Adyar Theosophical Society and was introduced to an European, Truman Caylor Wadlington, there. Wadlington wrote the first book about the yogi titled ‘Yogi Ramsuratkumar – The God Child, Tiruvannamalai’.

A poet’s naked deposition

N.Vinoth Kumar

To me, Balachandran Chullikkad got introduced by his poetic lines which appeared in one of the short stories published by a Tamil magazine. The words go like this: Life is a miracle. It always stocked an unexpected thing for you!

That abruptly hauled me into his world of writings. Though I didn’t know the language Malayalam, I had an insatiable yearning to read his writings.

Then came, his translated poem over late actress Srividya, that appeared in Ananda Vikatan, a popular Tamil weekly. Titled ‘Soundarya Lahari’, the poem shoved me to search for his writing even more.

Finally, albeit, I didn’t get the Tamil translation works of his writings, I landed up in reading his autobiographical essay collection. Written in his mother tongue, the book titled as ‘Chidambarasmarana’ Malayalam for ‘Chidambara Ninaivugal’. The book translated into Tamil by K.V.Shailaja and published by Vamsi Books, Tiruvannamalai.

In this book ‘Poet’ Balachandran Chullikkad reminisces about his life in the past and makes naked depositions as a humble ‘Bala’.

Starting from his student days, dealing the relationship with his father with a kind of cowardice, his guilty over aborting his child while he and his spouse were still college students and that’s just because of lacking money, his acquaintance with celebrities, his relationship with women, even losing his face by a girl over whom he made sexual attempts…Chullikkad shares his happenings and mishaps, unabashedly.

A reader will be shocked to hear that such a great poet once sold his blood for a pittance. But even in that poverty, he tried to be a Good Samaritan by giving his blood-soaked money to one of the patients he met in the hospital.

On another occasion, he strives to put off the fire in his belly. He was hungry and searching for food. It was an auspicious day. While all other people celebrating Onam, Chullikkad was left with hunger. All the hotels were closed in near by surroundings. He doesn’t find a fistful of food to sate his appetite.

Fortunately, after a detour he finally lands in a house as a beggar. Pitied, the woman in the house serves him. Midway, he confronts a girl who was shocked to see that a great poet eating in her home that too in the floor as a beggar. Whether you or I, being in that place probably we would have fled in spur of the moment. But, Chullikkad accepts that confrontation with overwhelmed sorrow and continued to tuck in.

He also reminisces about his rendezvous with Tamil film actor the great, Shivaji Ganesan. Chullikkad admires not only about the acting skills of Ganesan, but also his out-of-stardom qualities. Really, Tamils can held their heads high.

Amidst heart-wrenching incidents, there are some light moments fills the void. During one of his visit to international book fair, where he meets a old lady who issues a broadside over Swedish language as ‘a poor language’, simply because it doesn’t had Mahatma Gandhi’s autobiography.

In one place, he says that ‘Poetry may be a decoration for those who are affluent. But it is a malediction for the deprived’. Contemplating on the words we realise… c’est la vie!

Throughout the book the writing style is lucid and he doesn’t use any frills. That innate quality makes the reader engaging. K.V.Shailaja has made a commendable effort as a translator and this work turns to be a tour de force.

Overall, to put it laconically…. A depressing book which I have read in recent times!

(Panty)

(Sangeeta Bandyopadhyay)
(Arunava Sinha)

'..But, I wonder now, does sleeping with more than one man amount to having a great sex life?'

'Ilona Kuhu Mitra revealed that she had been masturbating since the age of four'

"Ilona Kuhu Mitra had remembered the story only because of this silence. She had fantasized about it. She had wanted to experience this silence in her own life. In her head, she would often enter the covered section of a boat. In her mind, she often wanted to cross a river in the darkness".

"...Ilona Kuhu Mitra went home that day and flung herself on her bed, trying to masturbate. But even rubbing herself for hours did not help. She didn't get even slightly wet. Ilona Kuhu Mitra resorted to every possible fantasy, conjured up every illicit relationship she could, imagined herself in bed with three or four men, even added two or three women".

"I've always known that sex has nothing to do with the heart. What starts with the body ends with the body. That's why I don't believe in all these clearly defined identities like homosexual or bisexual. Anything and anybody can give you that pleasure. Our pleasure orientation is concentrated in such a small area. A hole or penis, around which there are a few nerves capable of receiving the pleasure stimulus. The rest is imagination".

"Do you know what I used to fantasize about when I began masturbating?' asked Lavanya. 'My father doing my mother. Uff, I'd be so miserable afterwards. This is probably why I became so distant from my parents, don't you think, Ilona?'

'If a psychiatrist heard this, he'd call it a case of the Electra Complex', remarked Sunetra".

"When she stood naked before the mirror, she saw an asexual body. Earlier, she used to feel as though a celebration was under way all over her body, like a village fair".

"A woman who wears a leopard-print panty must be wild by nature. At least when it comes to sex. The question was, how wild? Wilder than me, or not as much?"

"..Yes, showering naked. Yes, she had soaped herself. Yes, she would soap herself again with you in mind and, placing her hand on her private parts, say exactly thrice - 'I'm yours, I'm yours, I'm yours'.

"...She thrusts the nipple towards your lips.

---This was what I asked you to come for. Because it was hurting - I can't scratch it..."

"...She went back home. And wrote the same day, 'I know the taste of sperm!' She described the taste. 'The juice from sliced and grated tender green shoots of wheat, ten days after the seeds were planted in soft earth, tastes exactly like sperm. Just like the beating heart of the wheat seedlings in that juice, the spirit of life can be clearly discerned when drinking sperm. When the liquid slides down the tongue, its effervescence spreads all the way to the windpipe'. Dying without getting to know this extraordinary taste is a failure of being born as a woman. It is the duty of a man to help a woman experience this unique taste. This helping hand is known as love".

"Ilona usually left office before the sun punctured the night sky with a pin".

"Apart from the friends, family, colleagues and work associates in our lives, there are some people whom we have never met, never spoken to, who do not know us, who think of us as collective nouns - viewers, audience, citizens, voters and so on".

Of stars that shone once...

N.Vinoth Kumar

It was not Einstein. It was not Helen Keller. It was not our parents too. But it was the actors and actress that most of us perceived as our role models during our childhood days.

None of us can deny this statement. If you go by the statement, then the book ‘Aasai Mugangal’ is for you.

Compiled by eminent writer and editor of many books, C Mohan, the work ‘Aasai Mugangal’ has been published by Kayal Kavin Pathippagam, Chennai.

One cannot flatly term the films as just a leisure time entertainment.  It is a medium whereby the cultural aspects of a society are reflected. In one way it is a kind of political tool to make satires over the happenings unfolds in a society.

To put it more succinctly, in the words of the author of the book, “Cinema is turned into a kind of celebration. A festivity celebrated all through the year”.

Over past two hundred years, the cinema industry has touched new heights.  The kind of film-making is changed, the new kinds of cinematography tools are invented, the narrative style has been changed and still it is continuing to evolve in all possibilities.

Parallel to the changes in these show business, the audience’s perception to a film is also been changed. Gone are the days, where a viewer whistles while a hero pits single-handedly against tens of villains or starts to clap when the heroine sweeps of her feet to his man.

The viewers started to think. They started to analyse. They even evaluate. But still, apart from all technicalities of a film, the viewers continues to relate them with their favourite actors and actress, where a man dreaming of making love with his favourite actress and a woman dreaming of clasping hands with her favourite actor.

And here goes C Mohan saying, “…Actors and actresses are being our priceless possessions of our childhood memories”.

Adding to this, we can say that at some point the actors once we liked merely as favourite hero or heroine turns to be our ‘dream girls’ or ‘dream boys’.

The book ‘Aasai Mugangal’ is about such dream girls. It is a compilation of essays about yesteryear actresses who were perceived as ‘dream girls’ in their days by their fans. Most of the essays were written by writers such as A Muthulingam, S Ramakrishnan, Asokamitran, Jeyamohan, Baskar Sakthi and film directors like Balu Mahendra, Vasanth, Seenu Ramasamy. Few written by critics like R P Rajanayaham, V M S Subagunarajan. C Mohan himself has written two essays.

The constellation ranges from T R Rajakumari to Asin. There are 20 essays written about some 20 actresses, which are creating an impression of representing a century old Indian cinema if not at least 80 plus years of Tamil cinema.

Essays in this collection don’t have any filmography of any artistes. Rather, they talks about the rise and fall of the actresses and portrays their lives behind the cameras.

The book filled with information out of which many were never known before to any common man or the fans. Like, K R Vijaya was the only actor of that time who own an aeroplane and T R Rajakumari built a cinema theatre bearing her name during her hey days and it was opened by S S Vasan of Gemini Studios. Also, she started a production house named ‘R R Pictures’ which produced ‘Koondukkili’ only film that brought MGR and Shivaji together for first and last time.

Reminiscing about his association with Padmini, A Muthulingam writes that whenever Padmini refers of a film it’s her manner to include the director, the producer, the actors’ names and even the year the film released.

S Ramakrishnan in his essay on Savithri brings some interesting information like the fans of Savithri has set up a statue of her near Vijayawada. Probably that could be the great veneration in turn for her, who once set up a statue for Nagaswaram virtuoso Karukurichi Arunachalam. She nurtured her children to watch Hollywood movies and for this purpose she even built a 16 MM theatre in her house.

Writing about Saroja Devi, C Mohan says that it was after the arrival of the actress, the camera started to picturise the dorsal side of the actresses. (I am quite intrigued whether he is trying to say that Saroja Devi was a perfect ‘callipygian’ of her days?)

Readers will surprise to hear that Vyjayanthimala refused to accept the award given for her performance in the film ‘Devdas’ in which she played the role of Chandramukhi. Because, she considered herself that she is the heroine of the film but the award jury chosen her as ‘best supporting actress’.

While talking about Srividya, writer Sukumaran captures her acting skills in just one line, which goes as ‘Srividya was not a star. But she was a performer’.

‘An actress is not a machine, but they treat you like a machine. A money machine’ there said Marilyn Monroe. The statement is categorically true. On the other hand, albeit acting is another profession, some of the stars did real justice to their part.

If you really want to know the space shared, created and left by the great actresses and here it is! A book that brings you the stars that shone once and reading it in your week-off makes your day worth living.
